Advanced Filmmaking 101
The task we have been given is to find a film we like and create a trailer for it but, we have to edit this trailer in the style of a different genre. We can do this by using footage from the original theatrical trailers or other footage from the films, sound bites, music that is fitting to the genre, colour grading, filters, etc. This is a great task into the understanding and importance of marketing a films genre, as well as the importance of editing in a film.
I have come up with a few ideas:
I now have narrowed it down to four potential ideas I would like to try:
After a long time searching on Youtube for clips from The Goonies film, especially of good quality, I decided to change my idea. There were not many clips and full scenes as I hoped and not many of them were of great quality (as the film came out in 1985 and has only been remastered on anniversaries). So, I then started to think of more ideas I could do, including those ideas from the top of the blogpost.

I then decided to try and create a trailer for the film "Lady Bird" (2017) in the style of a Psychological Thriller. I thought this would be a good idea as it is one of my favourite films and there are many scenes where the character, Lady Bird, struggles with her identity, trying to fit in and her mental health. There are many scenes in the film where she has many outbursts and usually fights with her mum. So, I thought it would be interesting and fun to try and create this film into an entirely different genre.
Once finishing the trailer, I did find it ended up being more of a Thriller rather than a Psychological one but, I am very proud of the outcome and I think I did my best on the edit.
I have come up with a few ideas:
- The Goonies (1985): Genres are Family/Comedy/Adventure/Romance - I would like to try changing the genre to Horror
- Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988): Genres are Family/Comedy/Action/Mystery - I would like to try changing the genre to Noir (in black and white, '40s-'50s style)
- Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019): Genres are Comedy/Drama - I would like to try changing the genre to Thriller
- I, Tonya (2017): Genres are Dark Comedy/Drama/Sports/Indie - I would like to try changing the genre to either Horror or Crime-Thriller
- The Hunger Games (2012): Genres are Sci-Fi/Action/Adventure/Fantasy/Thriller - I would like to try changing the genre to Romantic-Comedy
- Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989): Genres are Family/Sci-Fi/Comedy/Adventure - I would like to try changing the genre to Horror
- Edward Scissorhands (1990): Genres are Romance/Fantasy/Drama - I would like to try changing the genre to Horror
- Stand by Me (1986): Genres are Drama/Comedy/Adventure - I would like to try changing the genre to either Horror or Thriller
- E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982): Genres are Family/Action/Adventure/Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Drama - I would like to try changing the genre to either Horror or Comedy
- Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1990): Genres are Family/Adventure/Comedy - I would like to try changing the genre to Thriller

It was quite a hard decision to finally pick what I wanted to do but I have decided on creating a trailer for The Goonies. I have chosen The Goonies because it is one of my favourite films and I think it will be interesting to try editing it in the style of a Horror. I also think structuring and styling the film to look like a Horror will work as I remember watching it for the first time when I was ten-years-old and finding some of the scenes quite terrifying, so with a bit of colour grading and intense music it'll look great.
