Greggs Advert: "Tastier Things"

Image
Task: is to create an entertaining advert for Greggs that is entertaining, markets the company and can only be 15 seconds long.    I came up with my Greggs ad idea when we started researching their social media pages. I found a post on the Greggs Facebook page that joked about the Netflix platform by changing their homepage (which would be full of films and TV shows) to products from Greggs. At the top of the picture it shows a show called 'Tastier Things' (a play on Stranger Things). From this alone I then thought what it would be like if Stranger Things did include the Greggs company in its universe, as this is probably a very unrealistic thing that would happen in the show as it's set in 1980s America.  Advert Idea The outline of the story is Eleven (protagonist) is sat at home alone, bored, eating  Eggo  waffles. She then reaches into the box to find another waffle but sees that she has emptied it. Now looking around the ...

In the Rouge of the Night: A Film Noir (Filmmaking 101 - Boot Camp)

Image
Task: Film a film noir sequence that has no dialogue and only tells the story through visuals. The task I chose, and was given, in my group was to create a silent film noir sequence. Before I got into figuring out a story and script I first researched on what is a film noir and what that genre of films consist. I had heard of the genre but was not familiar with works and stories from that type of cinema. When doing research I started to see all the stereotypes and typical tropes within this genre from scenes being surrounded by smoke, constantly, men coming back from war or detectives in the force struggling to find justice in society and streets full of crime. The era that is mainly said to be the time of film noir's is from 1940s-1950s when World War II began and ended and the aftermath of that, McCarthyism terrorising the U.S. and The Great Depression crippling America. Film noir very much presented the fear and trauma people felt in society at that moment in time, espec...

The 180-Degree Rule (Filmmaking 101 - Boot Camp)

Image
Task: Research and understand the 180-degree rule and put together a scene that uses this rule to maximum effect. The 180-degree rule is a basic guideline, in cinematography, that states the spatial relationship between two characters in a scene. This is done by keeping a camera on one side of an imaginary axis between the two characters, the first character is always on the right-side of the frame of the second character. The scene me and my group created, using this rule, is a serious conversation between a headmaster and a student named 'A Degree of Trouble'. What actually happens in the scene is Sarah Mitchell, a student, has been called to the headmaster's office as she is in trouble for something, that we do not know yet. Sarah is actually very much innocent and the headmaster has wrongfully accused her of disobeying school rules and misbehaving. It is very much a simple scene but takes the 180-degree rule to its maximum effect, we have set the scene in o...

Recreating the Interrogation Scene From The Dark Knight (Filmmaking 101 - Boot Camp)

Image
Task: Find a scene  you like from a film and re-shoot it, shot for shot. The scene my group and I chose was the interrogation scene from Christopher Nolan's 2008 film The Dark Knight which is the second installment from his Batman, The Dark Knight, Trilogy. The scene is set in an interrogation room at the major crimes unit in Gotham Central where the Joker (Heath Ledger) has been taken in for questioning. He is first spoken to by Lieutenant James Gordon (Gary Oldman) and then by Batman (Christian Bale).  We decided to pick this scene to film because it mainly contains a lot of dialogue within it but also it has the challenge of physical stunts that aren't to dangerous to re-create. We also decided on this scene because it didn't just challenge the crew but the cast too, with one of our team members, Joe, resembling Heath Ledger's Oscar Winning performance of The Joker. Our group also found this a very interesting scene to re-create as it experiments a lot with l...
